class='avia_textblock av_inherit_color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>In 2009 deden archeologen van RAAP een bijzondere ontdekking in de historische kern van het kleine Limburgse stadje Nieuwstadt: ze vonden tekeningen op een ruim 700 jaar oud stuk leisteen. Raadselachtige schetsen die nieuwsgierig maken.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>De eerste indruk<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Het stuk leisteen is een groot fragment dat in een driehoekige vorm is bekapt. Intrigerend zijn de subtiele lijnen die op de lei aangebracht zijn. In eerste instantie dacht men op de ene zijde een tekening van twee rechthoekige gebouwen met spitse daken met ruitvormige bedekking (huizen met leistenen dakpannen?) te zien en \u00e9\u00e9n of twee gestileerde mensen. Op de andere zijde is een geometrische vorm van een driehoek op een vierkant aangebracht: mogelijk een gestileerd vooraanzicht van een gebouw.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><strong>Nader bekeken<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bij nadere beschouwing met moderne scantechnieken bleek deze leisteen veel meer verborgen informatie te bevatten. Restauratieatelier Restaura ontdekte met behulp van geavanceerde fotometrische stereotechnologie een compleet nieuw en veel gedetailleerder beeld. Hoewel de lijnen subtiel zijn, zijn niet twee, maar mogelijk zeven(!) huizen zichtbaar. De veronderstelde menselijke figuren lijken bij nadere inspectie niet aanwezig te zijn. En in plaats daarvan zien we structuren die wijzen op wegen, en waarschijnlijk beken en bruggen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3><strong> De voorstelling<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De vraag is: waar kijken we naar? De tekening lijkt op de schematische weergave van een plaats. Maar welke plaats dit is, zal wel nooit duidelijk worden. Het is zeker verleidelijk om er middeleeuws Nieuwstadt in te zien, maar het kan natuurlijk ook de plattegrond van een andere plaats zijn geweest. Het lijkt een eenvoudige schets, zoiets als je wat op de achterkant van een bierviltje neerpent. Maar de moeite die het gekost moet hebben om duidelijk in leisteen te schrijven en de honderden lijnen, suggereren toch wat meer dan zoiets\u00a0<em>quick and dirty <\/em>als een snelle bierviltkrabbel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Meer lei<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Het stuk leisteen met tekeningen kwam uit een van de acht gebouwen &#8211; verdeeld over vijf erven &#8211; die bij de opgraving in Nieuwstadt aan het licht kwamen. In dit gebouw nummer 2 woonde een smid, getuige het vele metaalslak dat de archeologen er aantroffen. Het huis bestond tussen circa 1225 tot 1375, maar het is onduidelijk of een smid hier gedurende deze hele periode ook actief was. Mogelijk stonden er naast dit huis\/annex smederij nog een bijgebouw op hetzelfde erf. Ook in andere huizen zijn ook grote stukken leisteen gevonden met allerhande krassen. Gaat het om leisteen dat diende als dakbedekking of zijn ze gezien de krassen erin als schrijftafeltje gebruikt waarom in was getekend werd? Vooralsnog is dat een raadsel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>De opgraving<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over de opgraving die RAAP in 2009 en 2010 aan de Elsenewal in Nieuwstadt uitvoerde, schreef archeoloog Xavier van Dijk het rapport en hij presenteerde het onderzoek voor de Heemkunde Vereniging Nieustadt. Hiermee zijn minimale hoogteverschillen in oppervlaktes in beeld te brengen en zo is een compleet nieuw en veel gedetailleerder beeld verkregen van de tekening op de leisteen.
