Hij is \u2018ver van huis\u2019 gevonden pal langs de oever van de Linge in Zandwijk bij Tiel. Zo\u2019n exotische vondst in een Betuws dorpje lijkt misschien vreemd, maar is tegelijkertijd ook wel te verklaren.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Het gebruik<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dergelijke zegels of bullae zijn eeuwenlang gebruikt door mensen uit alle lagen van de Byzantijnse bevolking. Ze sloten hiermee zowel offici\u00eble brieven als priv\u00e9correspondentie en gebruikten zegels voor het bekrachtigen van documenten en decreten. De vondst uit Zandwijk heeft een verticale verdikking aan beide kanten van het zegel. Daar zit een kanaaltje waar je een touw door haalde, zodat de zegel verbonden was aan een brief of oorkonde. Pas na de bevestiging aan het document werd de bulla gestempeld. De afbeeldingen zijn onvolledig afgedrukt: alleen de verticale verdikking is gestempeld. Op de ene zijde is rond het hoofd een deel van een nimbus zichtbaar. Waarschijnlijk is dit een heilige, wellicht Christus zelf, aangezien hij op de keerzijde van de meeste Byzantijnse bullae voorkomt (veelal met lang haar verbeeld). In zijn linkerhand houdt hij een boek vast. De figuur op de andere kant draagt een kroon met juwelenband. Op veel van de Byzantijnse zegels wordt hier de keizer getoond. Aan de rechterzijde van het zegelplaatje is de Griekse hoofdletter \u0392 zichtbaar. Het voorwerp is gevonden in een diepe paalkuil tijdens de opgraving in 2012 in Zandwijk waar RAAP onderzoek deed naar resten van een middeleeuwse nederzetting. De paalkuil is mede door een scherf proto-steengoed gedateerd in de eerste helft van de 13e eeuw. Ondanks de relatief jonge context van de loden zegel is het voorkomen van Byzantijnse documenten in die tijd in Tiel of Zandwijk niet verbazingwekkend. De burcht bij Tiel was immers tussen 972 en 991 in het bezit van de Byzantijnse prinses Theophanu. Offici\u00eble oorkonden kunnen na de verwoesting van de burcht in 1202 verspreid zijn geraakt. <\/span><span lang=\"NL\">Maar het kan ook niet uitgesloten worden dat er directe handelscontacten waren tussen Zandwijk en Byzantijnse rijk. Zandwijk was in 10e\u00a0en 11e\u00a0eeuw een grote en belangrijke nederzetting die meeprofiteerde van de gunstige ligging van Tiel aan de Waal en \u00a0de Linge.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>De datering<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Nederland worden wel regelmatig pauselijke bullae gevonden, maar dit is de enige keizerlijke Byzantijnse bulla die ooit in ons land gevonden is. Met hulp van specialisten uit het buitenland weten we dat deze zegels vrij bekend zijn in het Midden- en Nabije Oosten, maar zeldzaam zijn in Noord-Europa. In Londen zijn wel twee vergelijkbare exemplaren met een B gevonden; die zijn herleid naar familie van een hoge keizerlijke ambtenaar, een soort minister van financi\u00ebn. Onze bulla dateert tussen 1080-1090.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Een verklaring <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">De bulla is een mooie verbinding tussen Tiel en Engeland enerzijds, en het Byzantijnse rijk anderzijds. Van beide bullae wisten de archeologen dat ze er waren, maar niet dat ze net na de bloeitijd van Tiel als middeleeuwse handelsnederzetting nog bestonden. De vondst bevestigt bovendien het bijzondere karakter de nederzetting Zandwijk aan de Linge, vlakbij het splitsingspunt met de Waal. Het is speculatie, maar het zou zomaar kunnen dat het waardepapier dat bij de bulla hoorde, om een lening ging tussen het Byzantijnse rijk en de Engelse koning, die via Engelse kooplui terechtgekomen
