informatie verzamelde voor de cultuurhistorische verwachtingskaart van de gemeente Venlo. En ineens ontdekte hij sporen waarvan hij dacht: \u2018Dit hoort hier niet thuis!\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Wat is het?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dit is de plattegrond van een doolhof en een restant van een oude tuin of tweede doolhof uit de 17e of begin 18e eeuw. Je ziet een regelmatig patroon met een duidelijk herkenbare doolhofstructuur. De doolhoven liggen verstopt in de bossen bij kasteel Arcen en de sporen zijn met behulp van een digitale hoogtekaart ontdekt: het Actueel Hoogtebestand Nederland. De plek zelf ligt op bosgrond van de Stichting Limburgs Landschap, op een perceel dat in het verleden bekend stond onder het toponiem Dolgaard. Deze veldnaam, die voorkomt op oude kaarten van de omgeving van Arcen, is de oude term voor doolhof. Wie goed oplet zou in het beukenbos van het landgoed de grondwallen van de \u2018dwaaltuinen\u2019 nog kunnen zien. Het grote doolhof is rechthoekig, anderhalve hectare groot en bestaat uit drie meter brede paden met daartussen drie meter brede wallen. De kleine plattegrond ernaast is circa 50 bij 100 meter. De doolhoven zijn aan de noordzijde doorsneden door een later aangelegde bosweg.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Hoe zeldzaam is dit? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doolhoven kennen we hoofdzakelijk van oude pentekeningen en gravures. Ze waren populair vanaf de renaissance en dwalen door een doolgaard diende als vermakelijk tijdverdrijf. De doolgaarden van Arcen zijn de eersten in Nederland die als archeologisch spoor zijn aangetoond. Ze waren in bezit van de kasteelheren van Arcen. Dat dergelijke sporen zo oud en gaaf nog in de bodem liggen, is erg zeldzaam en tref je in Nederland zelden aan. Doorgaans verdwijnen zulke elementen namelijk bij een nieuwe tuinaanleg, dan wordt het omgewoeld en verdwijnt het vanzelf.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Hoe oud is het? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Op een kaart van de huidige bossen van Kasteel Arcen uit 1805 staat de naam \u2018Dalgert\u2019 (doolgaard) vermeld op de plaats van de doolhoven. Ze zijn dus ouder dan dat jaar en mogelijk de oudst herkenbare doolhoven van Nederland. Vermoedelijk zijn ze aangelegd rond het begin van de 18e eeuw, de periode van het huidige kasteel. Maar wellicht zijn ze een eeuw eerder aangelegd toen het Nije Huijs, de voorganger van het huidige kasteel, gebouwd werd. In de archeologie worden tegenwoordig hoogtemetingen gebruikt van het Actueel Hoogtebestand Nederland, afgekort het AHN. Dit is een digitaal hoogtebestand met gedetailleerde hoogtegegevens van heel Nederland waarmee het mogelijk is tot op perceelsniveau in te zoomen en hoogteverschillen van ongeveer vijf centimeter zichtbaar te maken. Voor deze hoogtemetingen wordt gebruik gemaakt van een vliegtuig met laserlicht. Het laserlicht kan door een bladerdek heen kijken en zelfs kleine reli\u00ebfverschillen van de bosbodem zichtbaar maken. De data worden vervolgens bewerkt en het eindproduct is voor archeologen en landschapshistorici een belangrijke bron van informatie.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- close
